DEATH CLAIMS ANNA SCHMIDT

MERCHANT'S WIDOW HAD LIVED HERE 55 YEARS; RITES THURSDAY

MRS. ANNA SCHMIDT, 79, resident of Grand Rapids 55 years, died early Tuesday at her home, 13 National-av., N.W. She was the widow of AUGUST P. SCHMIDT, pioneer resident and meat merchant of Fulton-st., W., who died two years ago.

Mrs. Schmidt was born near Nuremberg, Germany, May 1, 1861. She came to the United States as a girl and settled in Cincinnati. In this city she was a member of the Altar society of St. Mary's church and of the LCBA.

She is survived by a son, RUDOLPH J.; four daughters, MRS. GEORGE C. BROWN, MRS. JOSEPH G. TOBIN, MRS. EDWARD J. ESCH and MRS. ALFRED F. WINTERHALTER; a sister, MRS. MARY BUSCH; thirty-nine grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren.

The body will remain at the residence until the funeral hour, at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary cemetery.

ANNA (WINZIG) SCHMIDT is the daughter of GEORG JOSEF WINZIG and MARIA LUISE MARTIN, both of whom lived and died in Germany. GEORG WINZIG was a shepherd.

According to the 1900 U.S. Census, Anna came to this country in 1890. Anna had a sister, MARY (WINZIG) BUSCH, who also came to this country and lived in Grand Rapids. Anna and Mary are also known to have had a brother, JOHANN, who stayed in Germany.

Anna also had two aunts, HELEN (WINZIG) GEIER and MARIA ANNA (WINZIG) DEGENHART LOEFFLER, the sisters of Anna's father, GEORGE JOSEF WINZIG (1824-????). Helen and Maria Anna both settled in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. HELEN was the wife of FRANZ MAGNUS "FRANK" GEIER. They raised a large family and have many descendants. MARIA ANNA was the wife of AUGUST DEGENHART. They had one son, JOHANN DEGENART (1851-1854). After August's death in 1900, Maria Anna married a second time, FRANK ALBERT LOEFFLER.
