Fred was the oldest of eight children of Johann (John) Wolnowsky and Anna (Kwiatkowsky) Wolnowsky of Klein Languth, West Prussia and Springwells Township, Detroit, Michigan.

He arrived at Castle Garden on the ship "Amerika" in 1888 with his mother and siblings. The family settled in Springwells Township, Detroit, Wayne, Michigan. Fred lived most of his life at 22 Morton Street, which became 6346 Morton Street after the Detroit street renumeration. Siblings and their families remained in the close vicinity. All attended Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit.

Fred married Annie Marie Fisher in 1898, Detroit, by Pastor C.F. Schatz of the Zion Lutheran Church. This couple had at least 11 children (see below).

Fred was a laborer in auto repair and worked for Ford Motor Company as a steel worker and factory laborer.

He shortened his last name to Wolin later in life.
