In his younger days Holt was a teacher. He had served Russell County as a magistrate and school board member, and his civic activities included past presidency of the Jamestown Lions Club. He was a veteran of World War I, a Mason, and a member of the Freedom Christian Church.
After the completion of Wolf Creek Dam, Holt built the Lake Cumberland Motel at Sewellton, the closest motel to the lake, and operated it until his death. He was also a farmer.
He is survived by many relatives, including the widow, Mrs. Linnie Holt; 6 daughters, Mrs. Lois McKinley, Monticello, Mrs. Elizabeth Bell, Daytona Beach, Florida, Mrs. Joyce Feese, Jamestown, Mrs. Carole Tupman, Jamestown, Mrs. Rachel Cunningham and Mrs. Frances Knight, both of Jamestown; one son, John R. Holt, Ramsey, New Jersey, and a step-daughter, Mrs. Anna Walkup, Jamestown.
There are three brothers, Owen and Marcus Holt, both of Jamestown, and Vernon Holt, Indianapolis, Indiana; four sisters, Mrs. Lona Carnes, Mrs. Edith Brooks, and Mrs. Minnie Butler, all of Russell Springs, and Mrs. Lou Sedam, Indianapolis.
The funeral was at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 22, at Freedom Christian Church with Bro. H.B. Popplewell as minister. Masonic rites were held at the cemetery by Russell Lodge 284 F. and A. M.
Interment, under arrangements of H.E. Pruitt Funeral Home, was in Jamestown cemetery. World War I veterans, as follows, were casketbearers: Fred Knight, Claude Beck, John Vaughan, Ivan C. Powell, Walter Carnes, Charlie Ray Winfrey, Walter Sharp, and A.V. Lutrell.
