Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 50th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, a regiment that was enlisted for a three month term. After he was mustered out in July 1861 he rejoined the Union war efforts, and was commissioned in September 1861 Colonel and commander of the 50th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He participated in many major battles, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. He was wounded three times, the last being at Petersburg, when he left the field only briefly, then returned to command. For his services at Spotsylvania, Petersburg, and Nye River, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on August 1, 1864. He mustered out on September 30, 1864.
