U.S. Congressman. He began his career as sergeant at arms of the West Virginia State Senate, (1871-73) and was doorkeeper, (1872-73). He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1876 and commenced to practice law at the Nicholas Court House. He was prosecuting attorney for Nicholas and Webster Counties, (1876-89) and clerk of the West Virginia State Senate, (1883-87). In 1889, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-first Fifty-second, and Fifty-third Congresses, serving until 1889. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 56.
