Julia Ann Pittman was born February 4, 1853 in Texas, daughter of Samuel Jackson Pittman (1820-1884) and Martha 'Patsy' Graham (1832-1854). The 1870 Federal Census for Beat 1, Texas (Lamar County) shows Julia A. Pittman, age 17, born in Texas; living with her father, S.J. Pittman, a farmer, age 49, born in Missouri; and her mother, Martha, age 39, born in Arkansas. Also living in the household were Julia's siblings: Sarah L., age 20; Tyrecia, age 9; William G., age 8; D. I., age 6; and James D., age 1; all born in Texas. (Note: Julia's father was married numerous times and Julia's only full sibling was her sister, Sarah L. Pittman. The remaining were all half-siblings as they all had different mothers).

The Texas Marriages Collection shows the marriage of Julia A. Pittman and Robert Kirkland James in Lamar County, Texas on July 20, 1871. He was born January 23, 1851 in Alabama. Julia and Robert had the following children: Samuel Jackson James and Robert Lee James (twins) born September 11, 1874 in Texas; Martha Ann 'Mattie' James born October 17, 1876 in Texas; Nellie Kate James born June 1890 in Texas; Effie Irene James born September 1892 in Texas; and Edna James born May 1894 in Texas.

Robert died on August 9, 1895 in Lamar County, Texas and was buried there in Tigertown Cemetery. On January 12, 1898 in Lamar County, Texas, Julia married her second husband, Thomas L. James. Thomas was born in May 1837 in Tennessee and was about 16 years older than Julia Ann. They had no children together, but both had children from former marriages.

The 1900 Federal Census for Township 5, Indian Territory (Choctaw Nation) shows Julia, age 47, born February 1853 in Texas; living with her husband, Thomas James, a carpenter, age 63, born May 1837 in Tennessee. Six children were living in the household, all were Julia's except for Jesse Edward and George who were Thomas's sons by a former marriage: Samuel Jackson James, a miner, age 25, born January 1875 (error) in Texas; Jesse Edward James, age 15, born May 1885 (stepson); George M. James, age 12. born April 1888 (stepson); Nellie James, age 10, born June 1890; Effie I. James, age 8, born September 1892; and Edna James, age 5, born May 1894; all born in Texas.

Julia's second husband, Thomas, died sometime before 1910 in Oklahoma. His burial place has not yet been determined.

The 1920 Federal Census for Drumright Ward 4, Oklahoma(Creek County) shows Julia James, age 67, born in Texas; living with her soninlaw, Ernest E. Bryan, a hired man, age 31, born in Texas; and her daughter, Effie, age 27, born in Texas. Also living in the household were Ernest and Effie's two children: Ruth Bryan, age 10, born in Oklahoma; and Ernestine Bryan, age 8, born in Texas.

The 1930 Federal Census for San Angelo, Texas (Tom Green County) shows Julia James, a widow, age 77, born in Texas; living with her stepson, Edward James, a building contractor, age 45, born in Texas; and his wife, Betty E., age 46, born in Texas. Also living in the household was Edward and Betty's children: Catherine I., an insurance company stenographer, age 19; Thelma M., age 17; Alice J., age 9; Edward, age 7; and Robert L., age 5; all born in Oklahoma.

Julia died on September 30, 1931 in Bryan County, Oklahoma and was buried in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) in the Highland Cemetery. Julia has no tombstone. Her burial information was taken from the records of Holmes Funeral Home in Durant.
