Samuel's father died on August 9, 1895 in Lamar County, Texas and was buried there in Tigertown Cemetery. On January 12, 1898 in Lamar County, Texas, Samuel's mother married her second husband, Thomas L. James. No children were born to this second marriage.

Also living in the household were Samuel's stepbrothers and siblings: Jesse Edward James, age 15, born May 1885 (stepbrother); George M. James, age 12. born April 1888 (stepbrother); Nellie James, age 10, born June 1890; Effie I. James, age 8, born September 1892; and Edna James, age 5, born May 1894; all born in Texas.
In about 1907, Samuel married Evelyn (maiden name unknown), who was born circa 1885. By 1918, Samuel appeared to be a widower. Samuel died May 8, 1933 in Bryan County
Oklahoma and was buried in Highland Cemetery in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) where his mother also was buried.
