Alva Earl Swadener, Sr. and his wife, Ethel Fritz Swadener had 12 children. They started their family in Spokane, Washington in 1910 with the birth of Alva Earl, Jr.
Some time before 1920 they moved to Seattle. He was pretty much self-employed, owning a hardware store in Lake City for a time and he was also a blasting engineer. He helped with the construction of Grand Coulee Dam and constructing the freeway through the Cascades.
