Garland was one of 5 brothers, 4 of whom also served during WWII. He joined the Army at Richmond, Virginia on 2 Nov 1942. Garland served with the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, I Co, 82nd Airborne and saw combat in Africa, Sicily, Anzio and Holland, only to be killed in action during Operation Market Garden. Garland was scheduled to return stateside after his Operation Market Garden jump. He almost came home. Garland was killed in a battle at Den Heuvel Farm on 27 September when his unit was over run. He was classified MIA until 1945 when his remains were located by Canadian Forces who buried him off of Kamp Road in Nijmegen. He would later be buried at the American Cemetery Margraten where he remained until he was returned home to be laid to rest with his family.
