Roman Catholic Cardinal. He was ordained into the priesthood on December 8, 1932. He was named Coadjutor Bishop of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 18, 1948, as Bishop of Pittsburgh on December 22, 1950. He then was appointed as Archbishop of Detroit, Michigan, serving from 1958 to 1980. On April 28, 1969 he was created Cardinal by Pope Paul VI.
