Elijah Younkin died on Monday at 11 o’clock and was buried on Tuesday at 2 o’clock. There was a large funeral, 46 buggies and wagons. Mr. Younkin was an old settler and a highly respected citizen, and has many friends who mourn his departure from earth. His disease was primarily asthma followed by dropsy. His suffering was severe but he was supported by an unshaken faith in God, being a member in good standing of the Christian church. Rev. J. N. Smith, of West Liberty, preached the funeral sermon.

born Jan. 11, 1816, in Somerset Co., Penn.;
emigrated to Muscatine Co., Iowa, in the spring of 1844, locating in Wapsinonoe Tp., where West Liberty now stands; in the spring of 1847, came onto his present farm.
Married Miss Abigail Dwire Nov. 3, 1839; she was born Aug. 16, 1821, in Pennsylvania, and died Oct. 9, 1862;
again married, Miss Eliza Silverthorn (whose maiden name was Morrow), July 19, 1865; she was born July 17, 1827, in Athens Co., Ohio;
have two children living by first wife--William and Albert, and lost five--- Norman C., who was a member of Co. F, of the 16th I. V. I., died at Corinth June 23, 1862, and Ellen, Martha, Catharine and Barbara.
Mr. Y. has served his county as one of the Board of Supervisors four years; also Swamp Land and Drainage Commissioner.
His second wife has one daughter--Florence, by first husband. Member of the Christian Church; Republican.

Died at his home in Pike township, of pulmonary emphysema of the lungs, Elijah Younkin, Esq., aged 67 years. He was born in Somerset county, Pa., and was twice married, leaving a wife and two children to mourn his loss.
He removed from Pennsylvania to Muscatine county in 1845 and settled in Pike township, residing there until the time of his death. His long life in this county, being among the first settlers and holding some positions of public trust, made him widely known through out the community.
Deceased had been a great sufferer for many years and especially during the past winter and spring when his disease became complicated with dropsy.....
He was a member of the Christian church and was largely instrumental in building the brick church at Nichols, working with both heart and hands, sparing no efforts to forward the cause of his blessed Redeemer..... He had no contention in his soul, but when his words were all verified he took his stand for right and gave one son to the cause of liberty.....
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Smith, pastor of the Christian Church of West Liberty, in a beautiful and appropriate discourse, which afforded much consolation to is afflicted family and friends.
