2nd LT US ARMY AIR CORPS - WORLD WAR II
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Basil Robert Huntress died May 19, 2010, in Augusta, Ga. He was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Fort Fairfield, son of Laura (Johnston) and Basil Price Huntress. He graduated from Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1941.

After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served as a second lieutenant in World War II. He was co-pilot of a B-24 Liberator, and sole survivor of a crash near Melbourne, Fla., that ended his military career.

Mr. Huntress became a systems analyst for the civil service at Valley Forge Army Hospital, Phoenixville, Pa. He retired from the civil service at Fort Detrick, Md., and retired to Augusta, Ga.

Mr. Huntress was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Almon Everett; a sister, Joyce Charlene; a nephew, Robert Coyle Huntress; his son-in-law, John Cloud; and by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Croft Huntress, in 1994.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie Peabody Huntress and her children and grandchildren; his daughters, Joyce Herbst and Jacquelyn Cloud and her children and grandchildren; and by his brother, Coyle Peter Huntress and his family of Limestone.

A graveside memorial will be held in the family plot at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. (Bangor Daily News 7/17/2010)
