Charles of Belgium
Birth: 1903
Death: 1983

Belgian Prince. Born Charles Theodore of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Count of Flanders, he was the younger brother of the King of the Belgians, Leopold III, and Maria JosŤ, future Queen of Italy. In 1917 the nations of the Triple Entente offered him the vacant throne of Greece, which he refused on the advice of his father King Albert. During the World War I, after the German invasion of Belgium, he found refuge in England, where he perfected his military training at the Royal Navy. In 1944, after the liberation of the country by the Anglo-American forces, the Belgian Parliament has appointed him Prince Regent. He maintained this role until July 20, 1950, the date of return of Leopold III from exile. (bio by: Lucy Caldarelli)
