Unexpected Death of Collector Frank Doan
News reached the city last evening that Frank Doan had died suddenly at his residence in Nogales at about 5:30 o'clock. The report spread over the city rapidly and it came as a severe shock to his many Tucson friends. His unexpected demise was deplored generally and many messages of condolence and sympathy were sent to his bereaved widow from Tucson last night. Mr. Doan was taken down with typhoid-pneumonia about three weeks ago. The attack was not considered serious at first and it was thought that his fine physique would help him materially in battling the fever. His condition, however, grew steadily worse and a relapse suffered a few days ago hastened the sad end.
Frank L. Doan came to Arizona about sixteen months ago to succeed William Hoey as collector of customs at the port of Nogales. He was a native of Ohio but had been engaged in the Treasury Department for number of years. He was one of the first officials to give general satisfaction as collector of customs. He made a conscientious and competent official from the start. He was universally liked in all sections of the Territory.
He was a true friend and he had a wealth of good nature and a big kind heart. Mr. Doan was a well-known Mason and a member of the local lodge of Elks. He leaves a widow and two children besides a [host] of friends to mourn his loss. The remains will be shipped to his old home in Ohio for interment.
