Zenas Benson was born in Murderkill Hundred, Kent County, Delaware, on the farm of his parents. He became a farmer himself, and married Catherine Reynolds on 11 February 1843, daughter of William Reynolds and Sarah Catherine. Both he and Catherine were illiterate, yet they sent all of their 10 children to school to become better educated. Their children are: John Thomas Benson (born 2 Dec 1843), Mary E. Benson (born 1846), Sarah E. Benson (born 1848), William J. Benson (born 8 May 1850), Elizabeth Benson (born 1852), Adaline Benson (born 1854), Wilmer Benson (born 1856), Alamina Benson (born 1857), Alden R. Benson (born May 1860), and Elmer Benson (born 1862). At least four of the children died as infants. Zenas was also spelled as "Yenas," "Zoemus," and "Zemus," depending upon which document you review; Zenas seems to be the most common spelling.
