She was the daughter of Wilmer Kersey Benson, Sr and Lillian Rebecca Fisher. She attended Caesar Rodney High School, and graduated from the University of Delaware as a teacher. James Estell Maden Jr and Lillian were married on 11 September 1930 in Knoxville, Tennessee. They had two children: Carol Emma Maden (born 30 Sept 1930, died 22 Sept 2000) and James "Jimmy" Estell Maden III (born 18 Nov 1931, died 3 March 2000). They were estranged for a number of years, living separately, but after about ten years, they reconciled. Lilian is buried next to her parents, in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, near Camden, Delaware.
