Daniel Bigelow, son of Amasa and Rosina (Cone) Bigelow, was born August 19, 1777 in Cornwallis, Kings, Nova Scotia. There on May 4, 1804, he married Emma Johnston, daughter of William and Mary (Peck) Johnston. He worked for his father as a shipbuilder until he was 21, then built a ship of his own, and eventually owned three ships. He moved to Horton, Pictou, and Canso, dealing in the West Indies trade until 1825, when he sold his holdings. He then lived in Richland county, OH, working as a doctor for nine years. In 1834, he moved to Milwaukee Wisconsin, establishing a sawmill and getting elected school commissioner. In 1837, he moved to Eagleville, and built a sawmill there. Back in Milwaukee, he married Jane Sleighton Aug 22,1838. He moved back to Canso, living with his son William, in his last years.
