In 1920 he and his parents and two sisters lived in a place they were renting on Greenville Road in Central Township, Madison County, MO. His father worked as a fireman at a sawmill.

In 1930 he and his parents, his three sisters, and his sister Mary's fiancee and his two children lived in a house they were renting for six dollars a month at 400 Villar Street in Fredericktown, MO. They did not have a radio. His father worked at odd jobs, he worked on road construction, and his soon-to-be brother-in-law worked loading ties.
