He was the Chief Steward of the S.S. Storaa.

He was the son of Johan Volzgen and Catherine Nielsen, and the husband of Gerda Nielsen, of Bullerup, Fyn, Denmark.

Per Wikipedia:
"In June 1940, Storaa was detained at Casablanca, Morocco. Her crew were imprisoned, but they escaped deportation to a German work camp when the Allies invaded French North Africa."

It was sometime in this period that Chief Steward Nielsen lost his life. The details of his death are not recorded. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-1945 (Oak leaf) and 1939-1945 Star (Battle of Britain).

The War Medal 1939–1945 was a British decoration awarded to those who had served in the Armed Forces or Merchant Navy full-time for at least 28 days between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945. In the Merchant Navy, the 28 days must have been served at sea.

The 1939-1945 Star medal was awarded for operational service between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945. Naval personnel qualified if they completed 6 months service, and at least 1 voyage was made through an operational area.

His name also appears on the Tower Hill Memorial in London, dedicated to members of the Merchant Navy and attached crews of the Fishing Fleet who were lost at sea. The S.S. Storaa was sank on November 3, 1943. His name was listed there erroneously, but is there all the same.
