Avery was the first child of Avery and Alma Gilliland. He enlisted in the United States Army on March 20, 1941. He served with the 828 Bombardment Squadron, 485 Bombardment Group (Heavy) and was lost on his first bombing mission to Blechammer, Germany and was awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart. Lt. Gillilan's name is listed on the tablets of the missing.

Avery was preceded in death by his younger brother, Ralph, who was killed in action in Sicily in 1943 while serving with the 504th Infantry Regiment. He was survived by his parents, three sisters and a brother.
