Joe served as a Staff Sergeant & Tail Gunner on B-17F #42-5886, 548th Bomber Squadron, 385th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Kansas prior to the war.

Joe was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 was attacked by enemy aircraft and crash landed a mile from Woensdrecht Air Field, on the Holland & Belgium border during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
