Ambush of Tank
30 March 1945near Emmerhausen, Germany

PFC Hill was riding on a tank when it was ambushed by a German with a panzerfaust rocket near Emmerhausen, Germany on 30 Mar 1945. He was one of the several Co. F. 2nd Rangers killed that were riding that tank on that date.

My Dad, who was severely injured, was the only survivor, According to my Dad, they were on a mission to rescue some slave laborers who had been working in a nearby ammunition plant and were afraid to leave because they said the Germans guarding the plant would kill them.

According to books, they were chasing a stolen kitchen truck that belonged to the rangers. My Dad said they knew nothing of the stolen truck. While eating C-rations for lunch an officer asked for volunteers to go rescue the slave laborers and he was among those that "volunteered" to go the rescue. After traveling a short distance they were ambushed by some SS German soldiers who were concealed on a hillside to the right of the roadway. All of the rangers riding on top of the tank died when it was struck by the rocket, except my Dad, who by some miracle survived, but was blinded and hospitalized for several months.
