Ray Hiltunen was killed while participating in operation Market Garden, the invasion of The Netherlands. He was aboard a Waco Glider loaded with jeeps and while approaching the landing zone, enemy ground fire shot off the left wing and it crashed in the vicinity of Oisterwijk, Holland.
He is buried in Plot K Row 6 Grave 16, Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands. This is an American Battle Monuments Commission location.
He also has a centograoh (memorial marker ) at the Vermilion Lake Cemetery in St Louis Co, MN.
