William Leonard Killed in Action

T-5 William Leonard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Leonard, 228 South East, was killed in action in Italy March 25, according to a telegram received Sunday by his parents from the War department.

William Leonard technician fifth grade, had previously been in the African campaign. He received the Purple Heart for wounds in action there.

Corporal Leonard enlisted in the army in April 1939 and started foreign service in January 1943. He was slightly wounded during August of last year. He quit Emporia Senior High school when a senior in January 1937.

T-5 Leonard's father, Frank Leonard, works at the Emporia K.E.P. power plant. He went to Enid, Okla. Sunday night to join Mrs. Leonard who had been called there because of serious sickness of her sister.

Corporal Leonard is survived by his parents, a brother, Sgt. Gene Leonard, a gunner in the Army Air force, stationed at Dalhart, Tex.; two sisters, Mrs. Lloyd A. Prater, Kansas City, Kan., and Mrs. M.C. McIlvain, of Wichita, and a grandmother, Mrs. T.C. Leonard, 227 South East.
