U.S. Congressman, United States Supreme Court Justice. He was an American politician, as well as a lawyer, jurist, prolific author of legal texts, and considered one of the most outstanding constitutional scholars in American history, especially covering the First Amendment. Even in law cases in the 21st century, his rulings are still being quoted. Born the son of a physician, into a patriotic and Calvinist family. He attended Harvard College, where he studied law and politics and graduated second in his class in 1798. After reading law, he was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1801 and began his law practice. In 1805 Story was elected to the Massachusetts State legislature. He was elected to Represent Massachusetts' 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives to fill the void caused by the death of Congressman Jacob Crowninshield, serving from 1808 to 1809. While arguing the 1810 case "Fletcher v. Peck" before the United States Supreme Court, which struck down a Georgia law, his courtroom skills were witnessed and his reputation grew. In 1811 he served as the Speaker of the House for the State of Massachusetts. On February 3, 1812, at the age of 32, he began serving as an Associate Justice to the United States Supreme Court after being appointed by President James Madison. He served for 34 years until his death in 1845 and as of 2023, he was the youngest to be appointed to this post. He strongly believed that the Supreme Court was equal with the United States Congress as well as the President. Other landmark opinions of his include "Martin v. Hunter's Lessee" in 1816, "Dartmouth College v. Woodward" in 1819 and "Swift v. Tyson" in 1842. Following being a primary founder of the Harvard Law School, he was a law professor starting 1825 and the Dane Professor of Law at Harvard from 1829 until his death. For his publications, he netted $10,000 from book royalties while his salary on the Supreme Court was $4,500. Story County, Iowa was named in his honor.
