Joseph was born in Brooklyn New York. Like many New Yorkers, he joined the U.S. Army's 77th Liberty Metropolitan Division in World War I. Joseph joined 10 October 1917 and assigned as a private to Company I 308th Infantry of the 77th; Service Number: 1709642.
His parents, John Hoosack, aka John Huzecky (Mar 1863-abt. 1914) and Anna Hurney Hoosack (Feb 1863-11 Oct 1935) were born in Petejovce, Stropkov, Prešovský, Slovakia, former Kingdom of Hungary. They were also reported as immigrating from Czechoslovakia, or Poland/Austria to America between 1887-1890. There are no known Find A Grave Memorials for his parents, but purportedly, as indicated by Anna's New York Death Certificate, buried in Calvary Cemetery, Woodside, Queens, New York where three million are buried. The family name was Americanized from the several recorded variations; specifically Huzecky in 1900, Husar and Huszair in other documents.
