He enlisted in the U.S. Regular Army in April , 1917 in Terre Haute, Indiana and was sent to Camp Shelby, Mississippi. He was assigned to Company B, 4th Infantry and was deployed overseas in May, 1918. He was killed in action July 23, 1918.
He was survived by his wife Ida and three children, John S. , Gladys and Daisy of Ft. Ritner, Indiana.
There is a Cenotaph for John O. Nelson at the Leesville Cemetery, Leesville, Indiana; there is a second Cenotaph at the World War Memorial, Beech Grove Cemetery, Bedford, Indiana.
