Private William Howard Stewart, born 8 Oct 1895, was the son of John C and Levera (McGill) Stewart of Doddridge County, West Virginia. Doddridge County is 84 miles due south of Wheeling and 62 miles southwest of Morgantown.
In the 1900 census 4-year-old William is living with his parents and siblings George 8, and Margaret 6, in the Central District of Doddridge County, WV. His father is a day laborer.
In the 1910 census 14-year-old William is living with his parents and brothers George 18, Frank 9, and John 4, in the Central District of Doddridge County, WV. His father is a lineman for the telephone company.
On his Apr 1917 draft registration William is living at 199 Summit Street in Elkins, Randolph County, WV. Elkins is 62 miles due south of Morgantown. He is a laborer for the Elkins Box Company.
William sailed for France with Company B of the 7th Machine Gun Battalion from New York City aboard the RMS Aquitania on 2 Apr 1918. His person to contact in case of emergency was his mother Levera Stewart, back at 1006 Kerns Avenue in Elkins, WV.
The 7th Machine Gun Battalion was attached to the 3rd Division. In June 1918 the 3rd Division was in the Marne River Valley east and west of Chateau Thierry.
Newspapers of the day and Soldiers of the Great War, Volume 3, West Virginia show Privates: Stewart, William H., from Elkins as Died of Wounds 19 Jun 1918.
William's mother is listed with the 1929 Gold Star Mothers invited to visit her son's grave in France as a guest of the US Government during 1930 or later. She accepted for a later date.

Stewart was initially interred at Grave #14, Temporary American Cemetery, Villeneuve-sur-Fère, France on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 19th, 1918, and was finally reinterred at Grave #26, Row #29, Section B. at Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Fère-en-Tardenois, France on the afternoon of Thursday, January 12th, 1928.
