Walter was the son of Walter Calfee Sr. and Arminte "Minta" Caudill. Walter had inherited a farm from his father which was on the Smith Branch of Carrs Fork in Knott Co., KY. During World War II, he served with the 79th Infantry Division, 313th Infantry Regiment. Walter died as a result of hostile action shortly after the D-Day invasion at Normandy and was posthumous recipient of the Purple Heart medal.
