William served as a Staff Sergeant & Radio Operator on B-29 "Devil May Care" #42-24452, 45th Bomber Squadron, 40th Bomber Group, Very Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Cook County, Illinois prior to the war.
B-29 #42-24452 took off, with a crew of 11, from Chakulia, India with 60 other B-29's on a bombing mission to attack rail yards in Bangkok, Thailand.
They were believed to have been shot down by Japanese aircraft. B-29 #42-24452 was the only B-29 lost on this mission.
William was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
