Lyle was a twin to his brother, Lynn Packard. Lynn and Lyle had one older brother, June; an older sister, Stella, and two younger brothers, Joy and Willard. He was born and raised on a farm in Onondaga, Ingham County, Michigan. Between 1920 and 1930, he and his twin brother moved to Detroit where they worked as drivers. Lyle and his first wife, Erica Feuell, had four children, two girls and two boys.
