Mansel Pinkney Kelley enlisted in the Flat Rock Guards, Kershaw County, South Carolina in June 1861. The Flat Rock Guards composed Company G of the 2nd Regiment, South Carolina Infantry, serving under C.C. Haile. The 2nd Regiment was also referred to as the 2nd Palmetto Regiment.

He participated in Manassas in the First Battle of Bull Run.

On August 28, 1861, he evidently transferred into Company D of Hampton's Legion.

While home on furlough, he married Eliza Ann Rebecca Thompson on 30 July 1863 in Kershaw County, South Carolina.
