-----

Maude's parents were:
Jesse Columbus Cisero Haliberto Vance (1861 - 1894)
Pearl Etta Stuart 1867 - 1950)

She was the first of their three children. Her siblings were Jessie Leta and Luther James.

She was seven years old when her father died in March 1894.
-----

On June 11, 1900,
Pearl E. Vance, widowed, age 33, was renting a home in Justice Precinct 5, Cooke Co, TX and had three children Maud, age 13; Jessie, 10; & Luther, 7.

Maude married John Pleas Russell, a wealthy farmer, in 1905.

On May 5, 1910,
John P. & Maude Russell, ages 25 & 23, owned a farm in Justice Precinct 5, Cooke Co, TX. Their son, Aden, was 4 years old. John supported them by farming. They had been married 5 years. The census record showed that she had given birth to one child who was living.

On December 13, 1910, Maude gave birth to a son they named J.P., possibly, John Pleas, Jr. He died the following month on January 29, 1911. A small tombstone in the cemetery signifies his birth and death.

Later that year tragedy befell the family when John killed their son, Aden Jessie, on August 20, 1911, and then took his own life.

As often happens news like this is carried far and wide by the press. This news article was published in Haskell, OK in The Haskell News on Thursday, August 31, 1911.

"TROUBLES CAUSE DOUBLE TRAGEDY IN TEXAS

J.P. Russell, a Texan, Crazed by the Intense Heat and Loss of Child, Slays Son and Self.

Gainesville, Tex. - Crazed from the intense heat after driving eighteen miles to town and combined with mental agony over the recent loss of a child and the serious illness of a wife, who was released from a sanitarium here and taken to her home, where the family had moved that day, J.P. Russell, a wealthy farmer, shot and killed his 5 year old son and blew off his own head with the same pistol. His wife is not expected to sustain the awful shock in her already serious condition.

He called his little son from the house to go with him to take a horse to the pasture and then the tragedy occurred. Russell had relatives who are prominent in Dallas and also in north Texas, where he had gone to his farm to bring in some household goods."

John was buried in Bear Head Cemetery (located in the Sivells Bend area) near his two sons. Maude's grandmother, Susan Stewart, and her two uncles, Charles & George Stewart, are also buried in this little cemetery.

Maude somehow endured and later moved to Oklahoma City where she died on October 26, 1925.

Thanks to FindAGrave member, ernie (#48454782), for trying to locate Maude's tombstone (Nov. 2016). He writes the following:
"There was no marker on the grave. This section of the cemetery is an area where many folks were buried that died during a flu epidemic. They were buried in long rows with no headstones. Some family members later placed markers on graves. Maude Russell did not have a headstone."
