In a letter dated Springfield IL, September 4, 1851, written by Judge David Davis to his wife, Sarah W. Davis, he writes, "Mr. Stuart's wife had a fine boy." Since Robert L. Stuart was born on September 3rd, this would seem to indicate that his year of birth was actually 1851, not 1852.
Another documentation for the 1851 date is the 1860 US Census. Robert is listed on that census as being 8 years old, however, the date of the census was July 13th. That means that if Robert was 8 on July 13, 1860, he turned 9 on September 3, 1860, and that indicates a birth year of 1851, not 1852. {contr. by Pat Schley #38763160]
