John Drake Townsend, the well-known lawyer, died suddenly at a Christmas dinner in New York last night. He had been out calling on friends during the day and was feeling unusually well. With his wife and daughter he went to a friend’s house in the evening.
While dinner was in progress Mr. Townsend laughed heartily at a remark that was made by one of the guests present. Then suddenly putting his hand to his left breast he leaned forward on the table.
He was assisted to a lounge and died in a few minutes. Mr. Townsend was sixty-three years old, and was for many years prominent in politics. He was one of Edward Stokes’ counsel in the trial for killing James Fisk.
