Martin was the oldest of 6 children. His dad's name was Matthew and he came to Denver Colorado as a young man. He sent for a French bride, a teenager about 16 yrs. named Sophia Zedin. Matthew died when Martin was just 10 years old. That would have been about 1906 or 1907. Eventually all 6 kids were sent to Catholic orphanages (all different ones). Martin didn't like the orphanage and ran away after a few months. He did odd jobs and eventually moved to Scottsbluff Nebraska and worked for the Light and Water Dept. Met Esta Faye McCoy there and married on March 11, 1923 or 1924. Martin was 27 yrs.old and Esta was 25 yrs. old. Had 2 girls: Shirley Ruth, born June 5, 1926 and Joyce, born in 1928. Both born at home in Scottsbluff. Family moved to Fort Collins Colorado in 1928. Martin was very much an independent and self-made man. Martin worked hard at a filling station and after a few years bought his own filling station with a house in the back, near Lapourdre River. Family lived there about 8 yrs.then bought property north of town and built a motel, about 10 cabins ($1.50 a night; $2.50 for 4 people. Moved their house on jacks to north of town and added on a bedroom bathroom by himself. Across the street was beet farm. Ran this motel and filling station on North College St. House was heated with radiator steam heat - put coals in furnance to heat rooms. In 1948 came to Glendale, California. Loved the city. Martin was a great husband and father and grand-father. Very much loved and he loved the Lord. He could recite the Christmas story from memory and did so many Christmas Eves. After Esta died in Dec. 1970, he married Mary Martin (that is not her maiden name) on One of Martin's sisters was Nora McVeigh. They were in contact for awhile, but I don't know what happened.
