She was born Feb. 7, 1911, in rural Revere to Joseph and Maude (Ness) Alfson. The family moved to Cyrus in 1914. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church and attended and graduated from high school in Cyrus. She worked at the Cyrus Mercantile managing the dry good department and clerking.
She was the activity director at the Hoffman nursing home for six years. She had also volunteered her time working with the youth while living in Iowa and in Hoffman. A member of Messiah Lutheran Church, she was involved with the church choirs and taught Bible classes. She belonged to the Pomme de Terre Garden Club in Morris and in 1978 was recognized for her community service in flowers and landscaping with the Minnesota Merit Award. She became a Master Gardener in 1990. She was also a member of the Grant County Garden Club. In addition to her passion for flowers and gardening, she enjoyed putting together family histories, reading and sewing. She is survived by her children: Bruce (Helen) Gildseth of Duluth and Connie (Stanley) Spangenberg of Lake Jackson, Texas; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Marcella Hansen of Cyrus; and her brother, Lawrence Alfson of Litchfield; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bennie (1989); one sister, Grace; and a brother, Manfred. Visitation: Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home and at the church one hour before services on Monday Service: 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, at Messiah Lutheran Church of Hoffman Clergy: Rev.
