From 1959 to 1974 he worked as a professor of constitutional law, at Sassari University, and served as Minister of the Interior from 1976 to 1978. In 1992, he was appointed as a lifetime senator following the end of his presidency. During his political career, he also held the posts of Junior Defence Minister and Home Secretary. He died in the nation's capital from cardiovascular disease.
