Major League Baseball Player. Better known as "Big Dan", he was the first Wood County resident to play Major League Baseball. After starring for several seasons with the Weston Buckeyes, Abbott signed with Saginaw of the Michigan State League for the 1889 season. Easily the league's outstanding pitcher, he posted a 30-10 record leading the league in wins, winning percentage (.750) and shutouts (7). One of his shutouts was a one hitter. He reached the major leagues with Toledo of the American Association in 1890, pitching in only 3 Games (losing 2 and winning none). Those three games would prove to be his only ones at the Major League level. After his big league career ended, he pitched minor league ball in Jamestown New York and Grand Rapids, Michigan. He continued to play semi pro ball into his fifties, supplementing the money he made as a blacksmith.
