James Ulysses Hughey
Birth: Mar. 6, 1869
Fulton (Kalamazoo County)
Kalamazoo County
Michigan, USA
Death: Mar. 29, 1945
Coldwater
Branch County
Michigan, USA

"Coldwater Jim" Hughey pitched in the major leagues in 1891, 1893 and 1896-1900. After pitching for Coldwater teams for several seasons, Jim pitched in the Indiana League in 1890, and then joined Fon Du Lac of the Wisconsin State League in 1891. When nearby Milwaukee was elevated to the major league American association in late 1891, Jim was acquired and pitched well at the end of the season. When the Association folded after 1891, Coldwater Jim joined Kansas City of the Western League and later Macon of the Southern League, returning to the major leagues with Chicago in 1893. After a couple of seasons with Toledo of the Western League, Hughey was purchased by the Pittsburgh Pirates where his manager was Connie Mack. After 1897, he was traded to the St. Louis Browns where he pitched better than his 7-24 record would indicate. After 1898, the St. Louis owners purchased the Cleveland club of the National League and transferred Cleveland's players to St. Louis and most St. Louis players to Cleveland. In Cleveland, Jim became the last pitcher to lose 30 games in a season with a team whose final record was 4-30. Jim finished his big league career back with St. Louis in 1900 before returning to the minors for several more years. (bio by: Craig Lammers)

Happy birthday Jim. Don Mincher went to join you yesterday. I shovelled Susan's driveway this morning as well.
