On Friday, July 16, William H. E. Cooper went peacefully into eternal rest while in Hospice Care at Lakewood Meridian, Lakewood, Co just 8 days before his 92nd birthday. At his side were his brother, Reverend Donald Cooper, sister-in-law Nancy Cooper (Cortland, OH) and niece Kay Workinger (Kennewick, WA).

Born July 24, 1918 in Tamaqua, PA to Joseph H. Cooper and Esther R. Cooper, he graduated from Tamaqua and later joined the Navy. Bill served aboard the USS Hoggatt Bay VC 99 CVE-75 in the Pacific Fleet during WWII. He met and married Ethel Callen while both served. Upon discharge they settled near Denver where Bill earned a BS Eng from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1950 (GI Bill).

Bill and Ethel moved to Los Alamos, NM where he made his home for nearly 40 years. As a staff member at Los Alamos National Laboratory in Reactor and Weapons Development he was a part of Operation Castle at Eniwetok, 1954 (first H-Bomb test); and later in K-Division - where Ethel was its secretary - he worked on UTHREX until retirement in 1967.

Returning to Denver following the passing of his wife of 44 years, Bill married Lauretta Callen Van Portfliet in 1989. Eventually the two resided at Porter Place Assisted Living. Following Lauretta's passing this remained his home until May. Those caring for him grew to admire his wit, intelligence, meticulous record keeping and warm, gentle spirit.

Preceeded in death also were Bill's sisters Evelyn C. Cooper and Vera C. Kurtz of Newton Falls, Ohio.

He is survived by brother, Donald, nieces Deane Sharp (Waretown, NJ), Kay Workinger, Lorna Columbia (Lakewood, CO), nephews Kenneth Kurtz (Newton Falls, OH) and Thomas Wertz (Grifton, NC), stepsons Mike Van Portfliet (Littleton) and Tim Van Portfliet (Westminster), and several great nieces and nephews - All who loved him dearly.

The family has tentative plans for a memorial service at Porter Place Chapel followed by inurnment at Fort Logan National Cemetary on October 15, 2010.

Those wishing to memorialize Mr. Cooper are encouraged to contribute to a charity of choice.
