HIAWATHA -- Major (retired) Forrest E. Gore, 67, Hiawatha, died Wednesday, May 12, 1999, at a Hiawatha hospital.

Maj. Gore served in the Army National Guard as commander of Battery A, 2nd 130th Kansas Army National Guard, from 1968 to 1970, and he served in the Army active duty from 1968 until he retired in 1986. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, and he had served in Germany, Turkey, Georgia and Kansas. He was decorated with a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Meritorious Service Award.

He also had been a lineman for Kansas Power and Light for 15years.

He was born Sept. 1, 1931, in Greeley, Colo., the son of Forrest "Ted" and Hazel Lawson Gore.

He graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1951. He earned an associate of arts degree from St. Leo College in St. Leo, Fla.

Mr. Gore was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Masonic Lodge AF&AM in Hiawatha, York Rite, and he was historian for the Second 130th Regiment.

He also was a member of First Baptist Church in Hiawatha, and he was active in the Boy Scouts, Meals on Wheels and restoration of the Hiawatha Community Airport.

He was married to Anna May Kramer on Aug. 7, 1954, in Seneca. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Cathy Chapman and Cindy Gore, both of Gardner; a son, Mike Gore, Littleton, Colo.; a brother, Don Gore, Hiawatha; a sister, Gladys Alford, Albuquerque, N.M.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Burial with military graveside services will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha. Maj. Gore will lie in state after 9 a.m. today in the funeral home where a Masonic Commital Service will be at 7 p.m. today and visitation will be until 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice and sent in care of the funeral home.
