Sallie America Long Ellis

The daughter of R. A. and Ella (Wilson) Long. Mr. Long named her after a sister with whom he was very close. Her name is spelled incorrectly on her vault.

Sallie America Long was born in Columbus on Election Day and later lived on Independence Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri. She was educated in Washington, D. C.; married an officer in the United States Navy; her first child, born on the Fourth of July, was named Martha.

She lived in Columbus, Kansas until her family moved to Kansas City, Mo in 1891. Sallie and her sister Loula lived a happy normal childhood. Her family was deeply religious and their home life was beautiful.

Sallie graduated from Mt. Vernon Finishing School in Washington, D.C. in 1903. Following graduation on a trip around the world, she met and fell in love with Hayne Ellis, a naval officer. They were married December 17, 1904 at the First Christian Church in Kansas City.

Their five children were: Martha Lamar Ellis, Robert A. Long Ellis, Hayne Jr., Lucia and Long.

Sallie and her family lived in San Marino, California following her husband's retirement after years of naval service.

Following her husband's death in 1961, Sallie spent the remainder of her life on Longview Farm in Lee's Summit, Missouri with her sister Loula. She died in 1970 at the age of 91.
