R. PRYOR COMBS DIES

RETIRED LONG-BELL EXECUTIVE WAS 74.

He served as Financial Officer of Lumber Company 33 Years.

Robert Pryor Combs, 74, a retired executive of the Long-Bell Lumber company, died yesterday at the home, Longview farm, Lee's Summit, following an illness of several years.

He was the husband of Loula Long Combs, an exhibitor of show horses at the American Royal and other major horse shows.

Retired in 1956

Mr. Combs retired in 1956 as a member of the Long-Bell advisory committee prior to the merger of the company into the International Paper company.

Mr. Combs was born in Campbellsburg, Ky. He was a son of the late Dr. George Hamilton Combs, who came to Kansas City in 1892 as pastor of the Independence Boulevard Christian church.

Mr. Combs attended Central high school and the University of Missouri. He joined the Long-Bell company in 1908 in Louisiana.

Was Bank Officer.

Later he returned to Kansas City and was associated with Kansas City banks. He became vice-president of the Kansas City Terminal Trust company in 1917 and vice-president of the Peoples Trust company in 1919.

In World War I he served in the Army and later in the Navy.

Mr. Combs and Miss Long, daughter of R. A. Long, were married in 1917.

In 1922 Mr. Combs returned to the Long-Bell company as a director and in 1923 he was dent and chairman of the financial committee in 1944 of the advisory committee in 1954.

Surviving also is a brother George Hamilton Combs Jr., New York.

Services at 3 o'clock Friday at the Stine & McClure chapel; burial in Forest Hill cemetery.

Pryor and Loula Long were married June 30, 1917 in her home, Corinthian Hall, by his father Rev. George H. Combs. The Long's had attended the Christian Church where Rev. Combs was pastor and Pryor and Loula had been friends for many years.

Following their marriage, Pryor encouraged Loula to continue to enjoy her horses and shows. Pryor volunteered during World War I and served in the Army as a first lieutenant of the Field Artillery and on duty in Camp Dodge, Iowa. Later he also served in the Navy on Admiral Samuel McGowan's staff in Washington as a lieutenant. He returned to the banking business in 1919 following his service. During the summer of 1919, he and Loula moved to Longview Farm, the 1780 acre farm R. A. Long had built for his summer home and where Loula kept her horses.

R. A. Long was blind the last years of his life and he died on the farm. On Sundays Pryor would play the organ that had been installed at the farm. Mr. Long would sit for hours listening to him play and Pryor would play hymns while Mr. Long would name them.

Pryor became ill and bedridden with Parkinson's disease and died in 1961 at Longview Farm.
