Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was the son of a professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, and was born on the post. He graduated from the Military Academy as part of the class of 1862, and was posted as a 1st Lieutenant in the 3rd United States Regular Army. He was then commissioned as a Captain, US Volunteers and Aide-de-Camp on the staff of Major General John M. Schofield, who was his brother-in-law. In November 1864 he was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd North Carolina Mounted Infantry, a unit recruited from Unionists in North Carolina. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "meritorious services", and was mustered out of the Volunteers on August 16, 1865. Reverting back to the Regular Army, he retired in 1892 with the rank of Captain. He was the younger brother of Union Brevet Brigadier General Charles Gratiot Bartlett.
