United States Navy Sailor. He was a crewman with a rating of Fireman on board the "Banner"-class environmental research ship "USS Pueblo" (AGER-2), and was the only fatality when the ship was attacked and captured by the North Korean Navy on January 23, 1968. The captain and crew of the ship were held until December 1968, and underwent physical and psychological torture during their imprisonment. Fireman Hodges was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star for his bravery and sacrifice in the incident. He was laid to rest in his hometown of Creswell, Oregon on December 28, 1968.
