Civil War Union Brigadier General. First served as Colonel and commander of the 8th Connecticut Infantry, serving in North Carolina Campaign of General Burnside, and commanding a brigade at Antietam where his forces assualted the famous Burnside Bridge. Commissioned Brigadier General, US Volunteers in April 1863 and commanded various districts in the Department of North Carolina until the end of the war. After the war he served in both houses of the state legislature, probate judge in Norwich, as adjutant general of Connecticut, and as a member of the state board of pardons. In 1890 he became president of the Chelsea Savings Bank.
