Civil War Union Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he was a lawyer and prospector in California, when he returned to his home state to enlist in the Union Army. There he raised a group of volunteers and was elected Captain of a unit in the 71st Pennsylvania Infantry. Promoted Colonel of the 71st Pennsylvania in November 1861, he participated in the Peninsular Campaign, Battle of Seven Pines and was wounded at the Battle of Antietam. After healing from his wounds, he was promoted Brigadier General in November 1862 and assigned command of a Division in the VII Corps. He commanded the District of Yorktown in Virginia, in July 1863 and led a brigade in the Bermuda Hundred Campaign in May 1864. After the war, he resumed the practice of law in Philadelphia, served as vice president of the Philadelphia Railroad Company and was a noted penologist.
