Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A civil engineer pre-War, he was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant of the 14th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry on August 23, 1862. By April 1863 he had been promoted to Major, and was in commander of the regiment during the July 1 to 3, 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. On the Second Day of the Battle his men helped capture the Bliss Farm buildings, which had been located in between the Union lines on Cemetery Ridge and Confederate lines on Seminary Ridge. During the 3rd day of the engagement his command was stationed along the Cemetery Ridge stone wall next to the Bryan House, and from there helped repulse Pickett's Charge. Theodore G. Ellis was promoted Lieutenant Colonel on September 22, 1863, Colonel on October 11, 1863, was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services", and was honorably mustered out on May 31, 1865.
