Civil War Union Major General. He emerged from the Civil War as one of the most distiguished Cavalry commanders. After serving as a topographical engineer and aide during the first years of the war, General Harrison was promoted to field command in October 1863. He became commander of a Cavalry Division under Philip Sheridan, with whom he particiapated in the relentless cavalry fights and skirmishes in the Spring and Summer of 1864. Transferred to the Western Theatre, he commanded over 17,000 cavalrymen in the battles with John B. Hood's Army of Tennesse. He particiapted in the destruction of Hood's army at the Battles of Franklin and Nashville. In the spring of 1865 General Wilson put an end to famous Confederate cavalryman Nathan Bedford Forrest's command by overwhelming him and destroying his troops at the Battle of Selma (April 2, 1865).
